Tom Shanks on trading:
For several reasons, we are close to, some would even say beyond, the aggressive extreme of the spectrum. One, we believe very strongly that we have a significant edge. Two, there is a market for this level of aggressiveness: Most managers diversify across the entire spectrum and want to place a small portion of their portfolio with an aggressive trader; plus, there are individual investors who seek high returns and are willing to accept the risk entailed in achieving them. Three, it suits my personal level of risk aversion. We impose risk constraints at several levels: individual markets, market groups, long/short, and total portfolio. Portfolio and systems diversification are extremely important as well; and to the extent that these are characteristic of our positions every day, they operate to dampen volatility of returns.
